The fifth and final town! There were about 200 stairs leading up to the hostel, so basically when we left it, we didn't want to go back to it. We really lucked out because there were 7 of us and we had our own bathroom and a kitchen! So I was finally able to cook for the group like I did back in London. Although, cooking abroad has taught me a lot about being inventive while cooking. The kitchen light didn't work, so I cooked with the light from the patio coming through the window. I made pesto chicken, grilled zuccini and garlic potatos. I'm really looking forward to being home to cook with a full set of kitchen supplies and real knifes!

This was by far one of my favorite places I had ever been. We are planning to go back on our last weekend in Italy!

Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10151712215086185070noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8163598369948283671.post-34060342336737374392008-05-07T02:18:00.000-07:002008-05-07T02:41:53.047-07:00Beach and more room pics For a day trip, we took the train to Viareggio. I think what I enjoyed most about this trip was being able to wander around the city on my own. I like that for class we go to so many different places, but we have to stay together in a group and don't really have time to see things for ourselves, so day trips are a must.
View of the city from a hill we wandered up. The bus was really easy to take, too. It cost about 13 euro for a round trip fare and it has a bus stop with a time table like a inner city bus. I think I like taking the bus a lot more than the train just because we can see so much more countryside as we wind around on the roads.
Myself, Caitlyn and Katie standing in front of their HUGE catherdral. Again, I really enjoyed wandering around it on my own. I may not know all of it's history, but as of now, it stands out in my mind as my favorite catherdral we have been to. I loved when someone in a horizontal stripped shirt would walk in front of the columns... there is a man behind Katie who is a good example... also reminded me a little bit of Where's Waldo. Haha. The other weekend, my friends and I took the tube north to a big park and walked around it for awhile. It was nice to get out of the city. The sky has been blue and the grass has been green, so even if it were to rain for the rest of my stay, I will never have the impression that london is a gray, cold, or rainy city.

Last weekend, Kate and I flew to Munich to stay with Monte and Margaret. It was a wonderful weekend! We ate a lot of delicious German food, traveled around a lot, and learned the power of sign language. We saw a bunch of churches, ran errands, and of course, had a beer and a bretel at the Hafbrauhaus. I am really looking forward to visiting them again at the end of my trip.

In a couple weekends Kate and I are going to Paris to visit Mailys.

Sorry this is so short, I think I am going to continue my blog through pictures...Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10151712215086185070noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8163598369948283671.post-57175051241193038912008-01-31T07:32:00.000-08:002008-01-31T08:10:36.291-08:00Catching up
This is a picture of the first morning I woke up. It is a view from my window next to my bed of my classroom (the brick building on the right). It is hard to believe that we can fit 26 people in it!

Jan 25

Woke up at 7:30 and ran some errands after getting showered and dressed. Eventually went over to Kate’s. Bought a sandwich from a French café that was very nummy and not that expensive. They all speak French to you, which was really cool, but threw me off a little because I had to double check that I was still in London and didn’t wake up in France again from my first study abroad experience. Then I saw Ireum, another girl who goes to Lake Forest who is on the same program that Kate is. I went with Kate and her friends to the Victoria and Albert museum, which was absolutely amazing, inside and out. It is huge and free and a place I will visit often. Then we went to Harrods which was unreal and quite overwhelming. For dinner, Kate and I went out with my Aunt Margaret. I believe we were at dinner for four hours! We ate at Wagamama which is like an Japanese stir fry place down the street. The waiter was super nice to us and first brought Kate and I a meal dish as a “starter” that had all this weird fish stuff. After the dinner course he brought me out a piece of chocolate cake and while three waiters sang happy birthday! Haha. So it was like a 21st birthday celebration for Kate and me since we weren’t together for either of our birthdays. He also brought out two things of saki, but I was so full by then that the three of us only drank one shot. A very fun night and it was really good to see Margaret. I’m going to look into it, but there is an idea for Kate and I to go visit Monte and Margaret in Germany, or somewhere that they would meet us half way. I would love that.

26
Last night I didn’t sleep that well. I think jet leg is catching us with me, bummer, but today is another full day of London touristy things with Kate and her friends, so I will just have to push through it. Kate and I are excited to get all of out tourist sights out of the way so we can really see the true London. Maybe I’ll finally get roommates today!

No roommates still, but today was a real adventure! We went to Buckingham Palace to see the changing of the guards, which was really long. Then we went to the Tate museum and then to a pub for lunch. Then Kate, Melissa, and Mel’s friend Jane, and I went to a court and then walked down to a fountain area and then down to Westminster where Big Ben is. Then we went and had coffee at Starbucks and then took the tube home. A lot of walking today! Beautiful and sunny, just a little windy.

28
On the 27th everyone finally started moving in. It was a little overwhelming with so many new people. I ended up going to a market called the Camden Market with Kate and her friends and it was AMAZING! Kate got some gloves that she likes a lot. Then I came back to my room and the whole group got together to have our first meeting together. After dinner, a handfull of us went out a pub near by. There are 26 of us on this trip. We stand out walking around the city for class, but there are a lot of really interesting people to get to know.
On the 28th we had our first real class where we learned a lot about London’s geography and history. Did some grocery shopping and went to dinner at a vegetarian Indian restaurant. After that we went to a couple plays by Pinter called The Lover and The Collection at the Comedy Theatre. I’m getting to know the people on my trip better and having a ton of fun!

29
Today we didn’t have class until two, so we all had an easy morning. Carolyn and I ran to Ryman’s to buy a notebook and then we went to a place that we want to become our spot to go to. It’s called the Troubadour and it is this old 1950’s style tea shop with music and a bar. We had tea for two and read our reading assignment. Then we came back and had class. For dinner, I made a chicken basil pasta with a bunch of vegetables thrown in. It was very good and lasted us two nights. Very nummy. Then we went to a play at Orange Tree called The Woman Hater by Francis Burney. After that, Carolyn and I went out to a bar with her british friend Dan and his friend. On the way home, we had a little trouble making out way back to the house because the tube had stopped running by that point. It was our first testing of the night bus. I little more complicated than the tube, but we made our way back anyhow.

Picture: Me, Carolyn, Ally, and Katie in front of the Roman Wall. Some how I flew in buisness class on British Airways. It was awesome. Needless to say, I didn’t sleep much... or at all. I tried though!
When I arrived I had no problem getting my bags, or getting a taxi, or finding 270 Earls Court Road. Way expensive though, I’m going to have to get over the prices here real fast. All the roads are full of houses and each street has a completely different feeling with their different facades. People here are also super nice! Although walking along the street I almost keep running into people because I keep trying to pass by them on the right, but obviously they want to pass staying on their left because they drive on the left side of the road here, so that is going to take a little time to get used to.
I’ve already met one of the other students who are on this trip, Charlie. He helped me move my stuff into my room and we walked around and got something to eat at a café. Then Kate finally got a hold of me on my cell phone, so then came trying to find one another. We both thought it would be a little easier than it was, so we didn’t take maps out with us, but we were both turned around. So after almost an hour of wandering around and racking up my cell phone bill, we finally found each other. I showed her where I lived and then we walked to where she lives which is about a mile away, really not a bad walk at all. We walked some more around her neighborhood which is really nice and quieter than mine, and then around 5pm London time, my lack of sleep and high of excitement for being here was wearing off, so I walked back home and unpacked my life for the next four months.
The place I’m staying is super nice, but really cold tonight. I have to figure out the heat soon because in a couple days I will have to give my roommates back their comforters… I also am in love with the accent! Every time I pass someone on the street I smile because it is straight out of a movie for me to hear the accent. I would not mind to speak with a British accent! I might work on that.
Tomorrow I am going sight seeing with Kate and some of her friends. The agenda is to go to the Victoria and Albert museum and to Harrods I believe! I also get to have dinner with my Aunt Margaret who lives in Germany! All very exciting! I think I will try to find a blanket on my travels tomorrow.
All for now, I need to try to sleep again. No jet lag for me!Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10151712215086185070noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8163598369948283671.post-78034938774740854302008-01-22T23:12:00.000-08:002008-01-22T23:17:14.343-08:00PackingHi Everyone!

Welcome to my Blog sight where I will attempt to update you all on my travels!
